WPPI 2014 in review, a few awards, and a giveaway!

These musings are strictly the opinion of Kathryn Osborne, Kubota Marketing Manager. This post has in no way been sponsored. No gifts, money, or products have been traded for this post (although they would be greatly appreciated).

We’ve wrapped up another year at the WPPI tradeshow. We are thrilled to have met many super-awesome people, experienced fantastic classes, and perused numerous tradeshow booths.

It was so good to see many of my favorite speakers and booths at the show. Tamrac, B&H, TripleScoop Music, White House Custom Color, ExpoImaging, Animoto, and many more, had booths filled with products that will now be gracing my birthday wish list. I was also happy to see some newbie speakers, visit cool new or updated booths, and make a few new connections. I even learned a few new lessons on navigating the show. As a result, and for my own amusement, I would like to present some completely made-up awards

Category: Speakers

Most likely to get famous: Matthew the Body and Alycia White
These two were new to the WPPI Platform stage. They teamed up on a great presentation that received lots of praise afterwards. Matthew will present again on CreativeLIVE April 3-5, on “Building a High-volume Senior Photography Business. “ I found a link if you want to sign up.

Sooo funny I almost peed: Gene Ho
Gene Ho was one of the chosen participants in Photographers Ignite. This annual WPPI event accepts a limited number of 5-minute presentations on a wide range of topics. Gene’s presentation contained, by far, the funniest examples of real life situations that come up when shooting weddings that I’ve ever seen!

Free beer makes you awesome:  Blu Domain
When a website booth gives out free beer in Vegas, I like it.

Not boring flooring: Nations Photo Lab
Their barn wood style, padded flooring was an oasis for my sore feet.

I noticed your cool new booth table: Black River Imaging
This booth added a sleek-looking white display table. They were kind enough to share with me that it came from Ikea.

Most Vegasified: ProFoto
The shy, rhythmically challenged, Elvis made me really happy.

Coolest bag lady: TENBA Bags
I finally had the chance to see these bags at this show. The best part was meeting the bag designer. Yeah—so cool, and nice! Love the bags too.  Good colors, useful design features, and a waterproof bottom. BAM.

Your sales guy was just as swell as your product: Woodsnap
I stopped at a booth to check out their wood products. Many booths had these, but this booth had a guy who quickly sold me on the quality and craftsmanship of their product versus their competitors. He gave me full specs without my feeling like he was pushy or overwhelming me.

Your business card need may need a makeover:
Everyone who gave me a business card with itty bitty font and/or no contact info.

Best breakfast deal: The pizza joint in the MGM Food Court
Coffee, biscuit, and hash browns for less than $8. Sold.

Best breakfast deal runner-up: Instant Oatmeal
The water in the MGM hotel room sinks was hot enough to make instant oatmeal. Boom.

Category: People who deserve a shout out

Best people to get trapped on a deserted Island with:  Daniel and Kate Pullen of Daniel Pullen Photography . I was lucky enough to navigate the Red Rock Canyon with these kind folks. I love them. #Iwouldfollowyouoffacliff

I like you because you are from NC too:  Cathy Anderson of TPS Photography. They say WPPI is all about networking. When you meet someone who knows people you know, you bond.

My favorite WPPI so far:  The WPPI Team 2014

Yay! The WPPI team did an awesome job this year pulling together a great group of speakers, attendees, and exhibitors. There were tons of fun networking opportunities. AND, this year exhibitors got snacks in the booth! Thanks ya’ll.

Did you attend WPPI 2014? What awards should be added to this list? Who would be the winner?

See you next year!
